On Tuesday June 19, 2018 at the 4th Regular Convention of the BMWED-IBT, Pennsylvania Federation General Chairman Jed Dodd was elected, by acclamation, to the National Division position of Vice President At-Large.
General Chairman Jed Dodd’s career on the railroad began in 1976 while working in the track department as a welder helper, all the while attending college and obtaining his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in labor studies.
Brother Dodd served as local chairman of Local Lodge 3068, and in 1983 was elected as General Chairman of the Pennsylvania Federation, also serving on our BMWED National Division Executive Board. Brother Dodd has chaired the bargaining committees on both Amtrak/Conrail since 1983, and the Norfolk Southern Committee since 1999. We all can attest to his skills and experience as a chief negotiator for our bargaining committees. Jed Dodd’s leadership has resulted in six contracts that have benefited the membership by providing wage increases, limited work rule changes, contained healthcare plan designs and kept out-of-pocket contributions in check and even lowered cost-sharing as was evidenced in our recent Amtrak settlement.
Brother Dodd’s 42 years of experience, leadership, dedication and ambition has provided us with the insight and experience to meet the challenges looking forward from today and in the years ahead. Jed Dodd has obtained contracts through solid negotiations, presentations before the presidential emergency boards and the US Congress. Brother Dodd has led many local strikes, including the Conrail safety strike that forced the FRA to issue regulations to protect railway workers from moving trains and equipment. Brother Dodd chaired the committee that negotiated these regulations with the FRA and the railroad industry.
Brother Dodd has been a member of labor boards and has argued hundreds of cases before arbitration. Many of those awards have a established good precedent in contracting out work claims, work week issues, and returned hundreds of workers back to work from terminations.
Brother Dodd has been a leader and an advocate for educating the new members of our union and working with our National Division to develop our educational tools and resources. Brother Dodd has sent many of our members to leadership training in Tennessee and has held numerous three-day schools at the Pennsylvania Federation headquarters teaching our new members and helping them understand and support the union, the wages it provides, the benefits, pensions, seniority system, work rules, and other rights our union fought for and protects. The basic fundamentals of defending our right to collective bargaining is the first step taught to the new members. Brother Dodd’s Vice President role will assuredly continue and elevate our commitment to the education of our members to ensure our union will survive for the next generation of rail workers. Brother Dodd has been a lifelong advocate, a relentless and outspoken leader in the fight to right the social injustices brought upon the working class by corrupt politicians and corporate greed.
Brother Dodd has spent the last 42 years working tirelessly for the betterment of our members and our union, through his hard work, dedication, and uncompromising commitment, Jed Dodd has had a hand in molding this Brotherhood into the great union that we are today. Jed Dodd will continue to utilize is best skills to keep our Brotherhood at the forefront as a progressive and proactive union, and now as our BMWED Vice-President At-Large. Congratulations on a job well done and on continued success, for our Union and it’s members.
